The registration of a trademark lasts for ten years from the filing date of the application. Unlike patents and utility models, trademark can be renewed for successive ten-year periods indefinitely. There are several types of trademarks:
- Of products and services: They are individual trademarks and serve to differentiate products and services from those of other persons or companies.
- Collective: They distinguish in the market the products or services offered by the members of an association, which will be the holder of the trademark.
- Guarantee: It is a mark that certifies the common characteristics of the products and services offered by persons authorized and controlled by the holder of the mark.

Different types of trademarks can be applied for at the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office
- You can apply for a Spanish trademark that once granted, its protection covers the national territory.
- Protection can be obtained in many countries (including Spain), also outside Europe, by filing a single application for international registration with the SPTO. Through the International Bureau of WIPO (Geneva), the application will be sent to the national offices of the countries designated therein.
At European Union Intellectual Property (EUIPO) trademark can be obtained by means of a single application, which must be filed directly with the EUIPO headquartered in Alicante. This trademark is one for all purposes, being granted, refused or cancelled for the whole territory of the European Union.
